DEPARTMENT OF NEW JERSEY

COMMANDANTS LETTER – 18 JANUARY 2015

I would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year and hope that we continue with all good things within our detachments and ourselves.

A reminder to all detachments to update your websites. The best time to do this is right after your installations. It is important to do this. New Jersey has been the leader in this endeavor so let us keep this up. If a potential member is trying to locate a local detachment and sees that it has not be updated in a year’s time, they may find that detachment less interesting. Updated information is vital to potential new members.

Uniforms, seem to always be an issue…we are Marine Corps Leaguers, we have rules about the wearing of our uniform…..we have web sites that illustrate what we should and should not be wearing…Leadership school provides a whole class to our uniforms…yet we still have a few members in just about every detachment who cannot and will not follow the simple rules that have been put forth from National. The Department of New Jersey does not make the rules up, but we are obligated to enforce them…..Detachment Commandants make a point of setting 1 meeting aside and hold a class in the proper wearing of our uniforms, and make sure you are following the rules also!

All forms, that you need for your detachment, are now on the Department web site. You can type in the information and print out a copy. Please have your installation forms filled out before your scheduled installation night…to many detachments wait until that night to fill out their forms, this should be done before hand.

Mid-Winter Conference will be held on Feb 12-14th, at the Fairview Park Marriott in Falls Church, VA. Information is available on the National web site and the Marine Corps League magazine.

Northeast Division Conference will be held on March 27-28 at the Best Western Albany Airport Inn, Albany, NJ. Information is available on the National web site.

Toys for Tots reports are due in. Please send them to Tim Flanagan, 2636 South 2nd St., Millville, NJ 08322, phone 856-293-8166 etf423@aol.com

It is that time of year that you should consider the two members who you would like to nominate within your detachments who qualify for the Distinguish Service Award. This is a small way you can let your members know that the work that they do, within your detachment, is recognized and appreciated. These names should be submitted to me as soon as possible so certificates can be made up and ribbons ordered. I would like to have 100% participation from each detachment so think about this now….no report has to be submitted…just the names. Deadline for submission is May 1st. Any name received after this date will not be accepted. Awards will be given to Detachment Commandants to present to members at their detachment meeting.

Leadership School, March 7th, is still accepting students, but the deadline is fast approaching. If you have never attended, consider it, this class is especially a great help to your newest officers.

Scholarship Applications for this year are now available on our Dept. website. Check the website for eligibility.

Information received by the Detachment Commandants should be forwarded on to your members, either by person at your meetings, your web site or your newsletter. Also get in the habit of checking your emails at least once a week for messages sent out by Department staff, it is very frustrating to send an email out and request a reply and receive nothing back. I would appreciate your cooperation in staying on top of this.

Youth Physical Fitness will be held at Rutgers University, 130 College Ave Gym, New Brunswick 08901 on March 19th 0800 …volunteers are needed as time keepers and to assist the students. If you participated last year, please wear the t-shirt that you received. Due to costs no new shirt will be distributed this year, only new participates will receive them.
