Board of Trustees and Department Commandants –

Last summer, the U.S. Congress passed a bill that amended federal law regarding the disposal of federal personal property. H.R. 1171, the FOR VETS Act of 2013, allows for the transfer of federal surplus property to veteran service organizations recognized by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.  Previously, only select veterans organizations providing health or education programs were entitled to such surplus property. The FOR VETS Act expanded access to federal surplus property to all veterans’ organizations recognized by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.  As a member of the program, your Departments and Detachments will be eligible to acquire federal government surplus equipment (including DOD & military property) from those agency’s at highly discounted fees – typically less than 10% of the original cost of the item.

In order to acquire property, an organization must go through the appropriate agency in their home state.  For agency contact information for each state, please refer to the GSA’s website: http://www.gsa.gov/portal/content/100851.

Don’t see what you need?  Let them know.  They accept requests, and can try to find opportunities in your area for direct pick-ups.

We are excited about this opportunity to have access to Federal Surplus Property as an accredited veterans service organization.

We encourage you to pass this information down to ALL of your Detachments and discuss it at your Department Quarterly Meetings etc.
